Winter in the UK can be a cosy season, but it also brings colder temperatures, damp weather, and potential home issues. Whether you're renting a flat or a house, small steps can make a big difference in keeping your home warm, avoiding damage, and staying safe.
Here's your winter maintenance survival guide. Simple things you can do that will make a huge impact.
1. Keep the Heating Running (But Smartly)
- Avoid turning the heating off completely, even if you're going away. Keeping it low (around 15°C) prevents pipes from freezing.
- Use timers and thermostats to control heating efficiently It's cheaper to maintain a consistent temperature than to reheat a cold home.
2. Avoid Frozen Pipes
Frozen pipes can burst and cause serious damage.
To help prevent that:
- Keep kitchen and bathroom doors open so warm air can circulate the pipework.
- On extra cold nights, consider leaving taps on a slow drip, this keeps water moving and stops pipes freezing.
- Know where the stopcock is (usually under the sink or stairs) so you turn off the water in an emergency.
3. Control Condensation & Fight Damp
Winter brings more indoor moisture and less ventilation, prime conditions for condensation and mould.
- Open windows for 10-15 minutes daily, especially after cooking or showering.
- Use extractor fans in bathrooms and kitchens.
- Avoid drying clothes inside unless well-ventilated or using a dehumidifier.
4. Check Safety Alarms & Lights
- Ensures smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are working (test them monthly).
- Replace any dead bulbs in hallways, porches, or outdoor spaces, it's important for safety on dark winter mornings and nights.
5. Keep walkways clear and safe
- If your rental has an outdoor path or steps, use grit or salt to prevent slips on icy days.
- Don't let drains or outdoor areas become blocked by leaves clear them regularly if you're responsible.
6. Watch for Cold Spots and Report Issues Early
- Keep and eye out for damp patches, black mould, cold drafts, or any sudden drop in room temperature.
- Report problems quickly as early action can prevent bigger issues, and landlords appreciate prompt communication.
7. Know Your Emergency Plan
- Save our out of hours contact number.
- Check your tenancy agreement for repair responsibilities, it is a team effort.
- Understand what counts as an emergency (take a look at our previous blogs - these are stated in our maintenance one!)
A Few Small Extras
- Keep internal doors shut to focus heat in used rooms.
- Use thick curtains or thermal blinds to reduce heat loss.
- Lay down rugs on hard floors to insulate and keep the space warmer.
Stay protective this winter and you'll enjoy a safer, warmer home while preventing avoidable damage.
Keeping your rental property in good condition is everyone's responsibility, and a well maintained home is a happy home!
