How to prepare for an end of tenancy clean

Moving out can be stressful, and the last thing anyone wants is to lose a part of their deposit over cleaning issues. That's why an end of tenancy clean is so important. It ensures the property is left in great condition ready for the next tenants, and keeps things smooth between you and your landlord.

At Metro Homes, we've seen how a bit of preparation can make all the difference. Here's our guide to getting it right!

1. Understand what is expected

Before you start, check your tenancy agreement. It usually outlines cleaning expectations and any professional cleaning requirements. Most landlords expect the property to be returned in the same condition as when you moved in.

Don't worry, fair wear and tear is excluded!

2. Declutter and clear everything out

Make sure all personal belongings and rubbish are removed from the property, including;

  • -Items from cupboards, drawers, and storage spaces
  • -Anything left in the garden, shed, or garage
  • -Rubbish and recycling

Leaving behind unwanted items can delay the handover and result in extra charges, so double check every corner before you go!

3. Focus on key areas

A thorough clean means paying attention to details. Here are the main areas to tackle:

Kitchen:

  • -Clean the oven, hob, and extractor fan
  • -Empty and clean the fridge and freezer
  • -Wipe all surfaces, cupboards (inside and out), and splashbacks

Bathroom:

  • -Scrub all tiles, grout and taps
  • -Remove limescale from sinks, showers and toilets
  • -Polish mirrors and clean extractor fans

Living areas & bedrooms:

  • -Dust and wipe all surfaces
  • -Clean windows, sills, and skirting boards
  • -Vacuum carpets and mop hard floors

Don't forget: Light switches, door handles, and behind furniture. These small spots are often overlooked!

4. Pay attention to carpets and upholstery

If you've had pets or there are any marks or odours, professional carpet cleaning might be required. Many landlords expect it, especially if the property was professionally cleaned before you moved in.

At metro Homes, we often find this step helps tenants avoid disputes later on.

5. Don't forget the outside

If the property includes a garden, balcony, or patio, give it a quick tidy. Remove rubbish, mow the grass, and trim any overgrown areas. A tidy exterior leaves a great final impression.

6. Book a professional clean (if needed)

Sometimes it's worth calling in the professionals. An end of tenancy cleaning service can save you time, stress and ensure every requirement is met. If you'd like, Metro Homes can recommend trusted cleaning partners who specialise in move-out cleans.

7. Final checks before you leave

Before you hand over the keys, take photos of each room to document the condition. This protects both you and the landlord in case of any disputes later on.

Leave on good terms

Preparing properly for your end of tenancy clean shows respect for the property and helps you get your full deposit back without hassle.

At Metro Homes, we're here to support both tenants and landlords through a smooth, stress-free move-out process.
